Job Description

The Detection Systems group is seeking nuclear physicists or nuclear engineers to support or lead research and development efforts involving radiation detection and related instruments and systems for nuclear explosion monitoring. The research group seeking to fill these positions supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring and fundamental science. This position focuses on novel detector development and application of cutting-edge radiation detection technologies for environmental and nuclear explosion monitoring.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

The successful candidate will be expected to significantly contribute to research projects. The incumbent will be expected to work effectively in dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams that involve physicists, chemists, material scientists, electrical and mechanical engineers and statisticians. Additionally the scientist will be expected to:

• Contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise.
• Provide solutions to an assortment of problems using conventional methods where casual relationships are progressively difficult to establish. Complexity of problems is dependent upon experience level.
• Continue developing technical expertise and knowledge.
• Develop new skills, network effectively with technical peer group, and promote a spirit of cooperation, teamwork, resource sharing, and mutual respect.
• Contribute to or develop new capabilities and contribute to or generate new ideas for technical proposals.
• Contribute to scientific technical products such as journal papers or reports. Depending on experience, may take the lead on developing content for journal papers, reports, documents, presentations or concept papers.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.


Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated skills in data analysis is desirable.
• Should have effective written and oral communication and possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams.
• Experience with designing, optimizing, setting up, calibrating, and operating a range of radiation detectors is preferable.
• Experience with cryogenic systems, vacuum systems, and/or gas handling systems is preferred.

• PhD with 0-2 years of experience are required. Degree in physics, nuclear engineering, or other closely related field with a research emphasis on nuclear instrumentation preferred.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:
* U.S. Citizenship
* Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
* Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
