PNNL seeks a passionate researcher and recognized leader in social data and social media analytics to lead the development and advancement of data science and machine learning for social media analytics research.
The candidate should have robust experience in the development, implementation, and dissemination of analytics related to social networks, natural language, image and video characterization, real-time streaming, and related fields applied in the national security domain. The candidate should bring thought leadership, influence, and technical depth to support national security government sponsors. This position may be staffed from either our Richland, WA or Seattle, WA offices.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- Provide national and international leadership in social media research and the social data industry.
- Lead development of technical proposals, and the publication/presentation of research findings in relevant journals, conferences, and professional meetings.
- Serve as the primary representative for social data research at PNNL, to include interactions internally and externally with peers, sponsors, vendors, partners, and decision makers.
- Possess strong teaming, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Establish vision and strategy for social media research that anticipates and addresses sponsor needs.
- Advocate for staff mentoring and development; inspire team members to produce creative solutions.
- Develop and maintain relationships with strategic partners and vendors.
Discipline, principal job duties/expectations, and qualitative and quantitative measures of performance that exceed the Functional Descriptor:
- Expert in applying advanced analytics to big data including machine learning and statistical methods.
- Experienced utilizing big data technologies such as ElasticSearch, NiFi, AWS Lambda, Spark, Dynamo, Hadoop, etc.
- Experience serving on conference/workshop program committees and/or actively producing open source or protected IP products in the field of social data.
- Influential publication record in scientific conferences such as: WWW, ICWSM, AAAI, ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, COLING, SIGIR, NIPS, ICML, KDD, CVPR, ICCV, and ICLR.
- Ideate across big data, user experience, design, software development, systems integration, dev-ops, and research to deliver innovative solutions to sponsors.

Bachelor's degree with 9 years of experience, Master's degree with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 5 years of experience.
- Proven track record demonstrating vision and leadership in developing programs and strategic initiatives.
- Principle Investigator on projects, and leading technical research and software engineering teams (engineered solutions capable for deployment).
- National security domain expertise.
- PhD in Computer Science or related scientific field.
- Project management experience with full scope, schedule, and budget oversight.
