This position is primarily responsible for providing legal representation for the Battelle Memorial Institute (Battelle), the operating contractor of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in the labor and employment arenas. In addition to these responsibilities, the person who fills this position will also be expected to be a key strategic advisor at all levels of the PNNL organization. As a member of the Office of General Counsel team, you will help create a strong sense of commitment and belief in the PNNL mission; help accelerate Laboratory growth by advancing and protecting PNNL's reputation; and help generate understanding of the value PNNL brings to the region and the nation.
This position reports to the Associate General Counsel and will work with management and staff at all levels within PNNL but will have primary interface with the Human Resources (HR) Director, HR staff, and the Labor Manager. This position is an active participant on the HR Leadership Team and will be expected to work with HR and other PNNL Directorates to develop and deliver an integrated human resources and labor strategy that advances, promotes, and accomplishes the PNNL mission.
Your key responsibilities and accountabilities will be focused on the field of employment and labor law and would include:
-Working collaboratively with the HR Director to provide advice and counsel with respect to PNNL employment, compensation, and labor strategies
-Working with all levels of PNNL management and staff to address concerns and issues that may arise
-Leading efforts to represent Battelle in matters involving litigation, administrative proceedings, arbitrations, mediations, investigations, and other proceedings
-Retaining, monitoring, and working with outside counsel as needed and in compliance with applicable rules and procedures
-Contributing to labor relations strategies and means for strategy accomplishment
-Participating on multi-disciplinary teams to address issues and develop strategies that accomplish the PNNL mission
-Identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations, and assuring legal compliance
-Researching and analyzing case law, statutes, and regulations as well as drafting appropriate legal guidance
-Working with the Office of General Counsel team to provide legal support necessary to properly represent Battelle and its efforts to successfully accomplish the PNNL mission

Law degree and 12+ years of relevant experience. Professional license and/or certification required.
-Admission to the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) or eligible for admission (admission to the WSBA will be required within one year of employment)
-Demonstrated advanced analytical, communication, and leadership skills
-Experience performing legal research and drafting legal guidance
-Demonstrated ability to participate in, form, and lead teams
-Demonstrated ability to collaborate at all executive and management levels
-Significant experience drafting and implementing complex settlements, contractual agreements, and employer policy documents
-Courtroom or first chair experience with litigation (including administrative hearings), alternative dispute resolution, and administrative proceedings
-Knowledge of National Laboratories and the Department of Energy
-Experience working in complex science and technology environments
