Chief Engineer, Distribution and Demand Response
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
This position provides technical thought leadership and project/program management for the Laboratory's research portfolio in demand response, transactive energy, buildings-to-grid, and distributed energy technologies. Primary emphasis of this position will be on management and development of novel analysis, modeling, and/or simulation capabilities. The research portfolio includes a combination of projects funded by the Department of Energy and industry partners. This position serves a technical role in providing technical direction, connecting research to industry needs, and solving highly challenging technical problems with a forward-looking strategy.
This position will also be responsible for expanding research programs including writing proposals, building working relationships with existing clients, and publishing and presenting the results of scientific and engineering activities.
In addition to the roles and responsibilities listed above, this position is also accountable for the following:
• Provide senior subject matter expertise in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Develop new funding opportunities working with sector and subsector leads resulting in an expanded research program. Accountable for business development consistent with sector strategy.
• Manage individual projects; including directing other staff, ensuring milestones are met, and communicating with clients. Accountable to Project Management Office Directors for expert delivery. Accountable to client with performance of high quality work consistent with the work authorization.
• Can be expected to lead major projects and programs with potential Laboratory or national level impact. These typically are complex, interdisciplinary, and cross multiple organizations. This includes developing and maintaining relationships with outside clients funding the portfolio of work.
• Recognized as a thought leader in directorate and sector strategy business development activities. Accountable to sector leads and senior management for input and execution of strategic planning activities.
• Publish results of the research. Accountable for ensuring the quality of products that result from the research performed.
• Mentor senior and junior staff.
• Ensure safe operating practices are followed on the projects.
This position will also involve mentoring junior and senior staff in these key technical areas and developing teams to expand the research. This position will also be responsible for collaboration with senior level staff from other organizations within and outside of PNNL.

• Bachelor’s degree with 9 years of experience, a Master’s degree with 7 years of experience, or a Ph.D. with 5 years of experience.
• B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
• Technical Expertise: In-depth understanding of power grid operations and planning and software development techniques including experience with agent-based modeling and mature methods for software development.
• Recognized National and/or International leader with experience in smart grid applications, software development and active participation in related national and international forums for power systems.
• Experienced leadership in development, validation, and delivery of commercial-grade software.
• Knowledge of utility industry economics and business processes.
• Level of Responsibility: Demonstrated success in working in a multi-disciplinary and integrated work environment is required along with the ability to participate in developing and communicating a vision and strategy with the research team. Can be expected to lead major projects with potential Lab-level impact. These typically are complex, interdisciplinary, and cross multiple organizations.
• Business Development: Must have experience developing large-scale research proposals and an extensive professional network within the power systems engineering community.
• Communications: Must have excellent communications skills in framing and delivering key messages internally and externally.
• Breadth of Technical Knowledge: Recognized for ability to broadly apply principles, standards work, theories and concepts of systems engineering to the development and implementation of new tools including applications, algorithms, models, and visualization techniques.
