Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. The Chemical and Biological Signature Science Group (CBSS) is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 50 biologists, chemists, and engineers that solve research and development problems related to chemical and biological detection and forensics. Much of the work involves trace detection in complex samples including environmental, food, or biological samples, and is directed toward national security missions to prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Key challenges include: identifying the appropriate signatures, sample collection/preservation and preparation, development of detection and analysis technologies, and development of approaches and analytical methods for high confidence measurements.

CBSS is seeking a senior biological or biochemical scientist to develop and lead a program of research focused broadly on the identification and characterization of bacteria and/or viruses that are problematic for human health and are of national security concern.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and program managers and will build and lead a program of research work in the area of biological threats and their characterization. In addition to leading world class research, the successful candidate will be developing research programs that align with the most critical challenges of national security sponsors, and will help develop impactful and long-term strategies for capability development at PNNL. The incumbent will lead prospective research projects and interface with external clients (i.e., DOE and national security sponsors including the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security) to generate new and repeat business and to grow PNNL’s technical capabilities.

- Recognized expertise in the application of biology or biochemistry to solve national security-relevant research and development problems
- Prior experience directing pathogen- or simulant-related research in biosafety level 2 or 3 facilities
- Demonstrated ability to develop, lead, and safely execute projects involving risk group 1 and 2 agents
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead multi-disciplinary teams
- Substantial record of independent contributions to research programs and extensive experience in technical and project leadership roles
- Demonstrated ability to develop new business and new capabilities; to efficiently translate technical requirements from sponsors into actionable research and development directions; to lead dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams of scientists; and to manage complex projects across organizational and institutional boundaries
- Significant record of peer-reviewed publications or an equivalent demonstration of productivity in technical open or classified reports
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
