The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a Senior Research Scientist to contribute and provide technical leadership in synthetic biology and microbiome-related sciences. We are seeking mid-career scientists with a track record for leading interdisciplinary research and securing external research support, a strong publication record, and programmatic synergy with ongoing programs at PNNL in human and environmental microbiome-related sciences (DOE, NIH) and biosecurity applications. A strong emphasis will be placed on individuals with demonstrated expertise in application of synthetic biology and molecular genetics strategies to test fundamental biological mechanisms. Examples of research areas of interest include: use of synthetic biology strategies to engineer and control critical microbial community processes for ecosystem sustainability, design of probiotics for disease prevention/treatment, and applying fundamental biodesign principles to develop biosignatures of engineered organisms and predict how they adapt to environmental influences.
The successful candidate will build and lead research teams utilizing core Laboratory capabilities, interface with funding sponsors, and facilitate close relationships with regional, national and international scientific institutions for collaborations and partnerships. This position includes access to extensive molecular research capabilities at PNNL, including world-class multi-omics measurement capability, strong bioinformatics and data analytics staff and infrastructure, advanced imaging, high performance computing, and computational modeling. Strong communication and writing skills as well as excellent teaming relationships across disciplines are required.

• BS/BA with 7 years of experience
• MS/MA with 5 years of experience
• PhD with 3 years experience
• Candidates must be eligible to obtain a DOE clearance
Ph.D. in microbial biology, biomedical sciences (including microbial pathogen biology), or relevant engineering fields, with at least 5 years additional experience in application of synthetic biology and molecular genetics (e.g., gene editing). Preferences will be given to candidates with a demonstrated ability to attract and lead R&D programs as evidenced by a strong publication record and sustained external grant funding, particularly though DOE and NIH, and strong team leadership experience. Candidates whose research interests crosscut between fundamental biology and biosecurity applications are particularly encouraged.
